I made two six inch square wooden trays (one for each side of the stage) In the centre of each tray I attached a wooden block. In each block I hammered two nails about two inches apart.

I attached the end of some two-core cable to each of these nails and ran a 30 foot length of these cables and attached a 13 amp mains plug to both cables. (are you getting nervous yet?)

I attached a thin piece of fuse wire between the two nails and a heavier piece of fuse wire in the plug. The plan was to place a heap of powder over the fuse wire between the two nails so that once the switch was thrown the electricity would blow the fuse between the two nails igniting the powder.

The heavier fuse in the plug should stay intact. I was right in all but one respect.
